I think the first time I remember hearing Russ Taff’s voice was in 1981 with the Imperials. At around the age of 10, I sat and listened to “Praise the Lord” (on a cassette player) and I recall how much I ‘felt’ it – even at that young age. I didn’t know his name, but those lead vocals…WOW! I later became a die-hard Russ Taff fan in high school. To this day, “Russ Taff” is one of my all-time favorite albums. When I needed inspiration or just wanted to ‘jam’…Russ is who I wanted to listen to. (And this was during the ‘bands with big hair’ era!) I shared his songs with my non-Christian friends who enjoyed them as well. I finally got the chance to meet Russ in Charleston, WV a few years ago, but I didn’t really express to him (the way I should have) how much he and his ministry has impacted my life. Russ – I don’t know if you will EVER understand how much your ministry means to me; how much you have helped strengthen me in my walk with the LORD. I pray this note finds you well and that GOD continues to use you in awesome ways. GOD bless you and your family and may HE strengthen you to continue to strengthen others and lead them to HIM. I would echo all of the comments above. Hearing ‘the voice’ in the Imperials, I sensed there was a longing to break free, that voice was being held back to fit the Imperials format. Walls of Glass confirmed my suspicions in a wonderful way. The collaborations first with Michael Omartian and later James Hollihan showcase that wonderfully passionate and expressive talent. I was apprehensive to see Russ live, thinking there was no way he could sound as good as in studio. Wrong. Better live! First saw him in Chicago with Amy Grant, later Anderson, IN, Indianapolis several times. I do wish there was a return to a more rock orientation but I enjoy Russ’ music through all genres, jazz, pseudo country, pop, traditional gospel. I pray peace, vision, and a heart filled with the love of Christ for you Russ! Thank you for all of the wonderful music and glad that, IMHO, the best male voice ever sang for the glory of God. If that voice had been unleashed on the pop world you would be known as the best male rock vocalist of all time by the masses, not just the Christian music world! Thank God for Russ Taff!. My world came crashing down in 1980 when my girl friend broke up with me. We were engaged at the time and I was blindside with her decision. A new radio station had launched in Houston at that time with the call letters KSBJ, and played contemporary Christian music. I awoke one morning to my alarm, set on that station, as it played “Praise the Lord”. My life was changed that very moment. I found the sheet music and lyrics to the song and began singing it at church and on a choir tour with our church. I have been an avid fan and follower of Russ ever since and have sang every song that came out on accompaniment tape as part of a ministry that developed from that morning in 1980. God bless you Russ. I love you in Jesus Brother, and can’t imagine what my life would have been like if the Spirit of God had not introduced me to you.
